The Logic of the System: The gasoline vapors in the tank cannot be released into the atmosphere. They are contained in a charcoal filter (canister). Purge Valve (The object of this code) is the “tap” that opens for the engine to burn these vapors. If it gets stuck open, the engine receives fuel vapor all the time, including when starting, which “floods” the car. If it gets stuck closed, the tank can even suffer a vacuum and deform.
- Visual Diagnosis: This valve is usually located near the engine mount on the right side. If you disconnect the electrical plug and the clicking noise stops, the part has an internal short circuit.
- Extra Tip: Filling the tank “to the brim” (after the pump clicks) is what damages this system the most, because liquid fuel enters where only vapor should go.
