The THP engine equips the C4 Lounge, DS3, DS4, DS5, C4 Cactus, and C5. It’s famous for its low-end torque, but it has specific issues that, if neglected, can be costly.
1. The “Chassis Rumor” During Cold Starts
What to look out for: Ask the seller to leave the car parked for a few hours. When starting the engine, listen carefully to the left side of the engine (where the accessory belt is located). If you hear a metallic “chain rattling” noise or something that sounds like a diesel engine for a few seconds, be careful.
- The Problem: The timing chain tensioner often loses pressure. If the chain becomes too loose, it can “skip a tooth” and damage the engine valves.
- Possible Solution: Replacing the timing chain kit and tensioner (a part updated by Citroën). If the noise persists even when the engine is hot, the repair cost is high.
2. Carbonization of the Intake Valves
What to look out for: With the engine warm, check if the idle speed is fluctuating or if the car jerks slightly when accelerating gently. If the car seems to have lost its breath or is misfiring without indicating a spark plug fault, it could be due to excessive dirt buildup.
- The Problem: What is an engine like? direct injectionThe fuel doesn’t pass through the intake valves to clean them. The oil vapor ends up sticking to them, creating a carbon deposit that prevents the engine from “breathing”.
- Possible Solution: Chemical or physical decarbonization (using walnut shells or sandblasting). This is a common preventative maintenance procedure after 60,000 km.
3. The High Pressure Pump (HPFP)
What to look out for: During the road test, accelerate hard on an incline. If the car jerks and goes into “Safety Mode” (rev limiter) with the check engine light on, there’s a good chance it’s the high-pressure fuel pump.
- The Problem: The high-pressure pump is a sensitive part that can fail prematurely. The car takes longer to start and loses pressure under high load.
- Possible Solution: Pump replacement. Check if the previous owner has already replaced it with a newer generation part (the original pumps from 2012-2015 were more problematic).
4. Valve Cover and Oil Consumption
What to look out for: Look around the plastic cap on top of the engine. If there is a lot of oil leaking out or if the car is emitting bluish smoke from the exhaust after idling, the cap may be defective.

- The Problem: The THP valve cover has a integrated PCV valve (oil separator). If it tears, the engine starts burning excess oil and generating excessive internal vacuum.
- Possible Solution: Complete valve cover replacement. Do not accept makeshift repairs or cleaning of this part; the system is sealed.
