Artigo voltado ao mercado Brasileiro. Artigo atualizado em 28 de May de 2026 por João Daniel
The reputation of French cars in the Brazilian used car market was heavily shaped by the history of their automatic transmissions. For years, the mere mention of an automatic Citroën generated apprehension among buyers. However, the current scenario is completely different: the brand uses some of the most reliable and efficient transmissions on the world market, shared with giants of the automotive industry.
Understanding this evolution and knowing how to differentiate each technology is the first step to making an excellent deal in the used car market or ensuring the longevity of your current model.
Content: The Timeline of Citroën Transmissions
The AL4 / AT8 Era (4 Gears)
It equipped models such as the first-generation C3, C4 Pallas, C4 Picasso, and the first units of the C4 Cactus. It was a 4-speed gearbox developed in partnership with Renault. Although very intelligent in its gear changes (adapting to the driver’s driving style), it suffered from the heat of Brazilian traffic due to an undersized heat exchanger. At the end of its cycle, it received updates and was renamed… AT8, mitigating some of the problems.
The Aisin EAT6 (6-Speed) Era
The big turning point came in 2017, when Citroën adopted the gearbox on a large scale. EAT6, supplied by the Japanese giant Aisin (Toyota subsidiary). This 6-speed transmission equipped the C4 Lounge, the C4 Cactus (1.6 Naturally Aspirated and THP) and the second-generation C3 in its final years. It is an extremely robust gearbox, with smooth shifts and excellent calibration.
The Current Era: CVT (7 Simulated Gears)
In the most recent models developed under Stellantis’ supervision, such as the new C3 and the Basalt SUV-Coupé equipped with the Turbo 200 engine, Citroën has adopted the transmission. CVT (continuously variable) which simulates 7 gears. The focus here is on maximum energy efficiency and fuel economy in urban use.

Solution: How to Preserve and Solve Problems in Foreign Exchange
To keep your Citroën’s transmission running perfectly, the secret lies in correct diagnosis and preventative maintenance:
- The Myth of the “Lifelong” Fluid (Lifetime): Many older manuals stated that transmission fluid did not need to be changed. However, in Brazil’s heavy traffic and heat, the fluid does degrade. Experts recommend performing a partial or complete fluid change every [number of hours would be inserted here]. 60,000 km or 5 years to prevent wear and tear on the internal discs.
- The Case of Solenoid Valves (AL4): If your older car experiences strong jolts (especially when downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear) or enters emergency mode, locking in 3rd gear with the “Sport” and “Winter” lights flashing, the problem is usually the… pressure solenoid valves (Acat solenoids). The solution doesn’t require replacing the entire transmission: simply replace the two main solenoids, clean the valve body, and change the fluid.
- Heat Exchanger Inspection: The transmission fluid is cooled by the engine coolant. If the owner neglects the radiator water and uses tap water instead of coolant, the heat exchanger can leak. This causes the water to mix with the transmission fluid, destroying the transmission. The preventative solution is to keep the engine cooling system clean at all times.
Interesting fact: Why did the AL4 engine lock up in 3rd gear?
Many drivers were startled when the AL4 transmission would jerk and the car would seem to lose power, refusing to shift gears. This was nothing more than a security strategy programmed by French engineers. Upon detecting any anomaly in internal pressure or elevated temperature, the electronic control unit would mechanically lock the transmission. third gear (known as Clean Home or safety mode). The goal was to allow the driver to drive to the nearest repair shop without damaging the internal components of the transmission.
