Citroën Suspension: How to Maintain the “Flying Carpet” Effect on Brazilian Roads?

Artigo voltado ao mercado Brasileiro. Artigo atualizado em 19 de May de 2026 por João Daniel

To talk about Citroën is to talk about ride comfort. Since the invention of the revolutionary hydropneumatic suspension in the 1950s, the French brand has made ride smoothness its main signature. In the current market, with the new C3, Aircross and Basalt, the brand’s engineering has brought this concept to life. Citroën Advanced Comfortusing shock absorbers with progressive hydraulic stops to recreate the famous “flying carpet” effect even without the complexity of past electronic systems.

However, navigating the potholes, speed bumps, and uneven asphalt of Brazilian roads requires constant monitoring of the entire system to ensure that smoothness doesn’t turn into metallic noises and instability.

How does current technology work?

Unlike a conventional suspension — which uses a rigid rubber bump stop to limit the end of the shock absorber’s travel in severe impacts — Citroën’s current technology adds two hydraulic bump stops at each end of the shock absorber (one for compression and the other for extension).

  • In light impacts: The spring and shock absorber control vertical movement together, without the need for bump stops, giving the sensation that the car is floating over small imperfections.
  • In severe impact situations: The hydraulic bumper absorbs and dissipates energy gradually instead of generating that “sudden thud” at the end of its travel, protecting the vehicle’s structure and the passengers’ backs.

Solution: Diagnosis of Noises and Premature Wear

Because the front suspension is tuned for comfort and smoothness, its peripheral components tend to experience greater thermal and mechanical stress. If you notice “knocking” noises when driving over cobblestones or turning the steering wheel, check:

  1. Stabilizer Bar Connecting Rods: It’s the cheapest part of the suspension and the first to develop play. A worn connecting rod generates constant clicking noises, but replacing it is quick and inexpensive.
  2. Tray Bushings (Scale Systems): The original rubber bushings can tear or dry out over time and due to dust. If the car exhibits constant misalignment or pulls to one side during braking, inspect the control arms.
  3. Shock Absorber Mounts and Bearings: If, while maneuvering the car while it’s stationary, you hear a “spring-cracking” noise or a squeaking sound of dry rubber coming from the front, the upper shock absorber mount bearing has probably seized due to water or dirt infiltration.
  4. Rear Alignment: Models like the C4 Cactus use a torsion beam axle at the rear. Although it’s a robust system, severe impacts with curbs or deep potholes can bend the axle, causing uneven wear on the rear tires. A good 3D computerized alignment can diagnose if the axle is out of correct geometry.

Interesting fact: The Car That Didn’t Roll Over Test

Citroën’s reputation for stability and comfort in its suspension gained worldwide recognition with the old… Citroën 2CV and later, with the DS. The engineering was so advanced that, in Europe, the brand challenged customers by conducting a public test: they offered a cash prize to any driver who could roll a Citroën on a tight corner under normal grip conditions. The meticulously calculated center of gravity and the dynamic action of the components caused the car to lean severely, but kept the wheels firmly on the ground, prioritizing active safety even before the invention of electronic stability control (ESP).
