The engine THP (Turbo High Pressure) It is one of the masterpieces of recent automotive engineering to equip the French line. Originally developed in a celebrated partnership between the PSA Group and BMW, this 1.6 engine with direct fuel injection and twin-scroll turbocharger (twin-scroll) transformed models like the C4 Cactus, C4 Lounge, and DS3 into veritable pocket “rockets,” delivering up to 173 hp with ethanol in the Brazilian market.
Although it recently left the assembly lines for new cars to make way for Stellantis’ global architecture, the THP engine remains a favorite among enthusiasts in the used car market. However, to enjoy all that power, the owner needs to understand that this engine requires aviation-level care.
Content: The Two Phases of THP in Brazil
When looking for a Citroën equipped with the THP engine, it’s essential to understand the chronological evolution that divides this engine into two eras of reliability:
- THP Monofuel (Gasoline only): It equipped the first imported and domestic models (such as the C4 Rock in Rio and DS3). This is the phase that requires the most attention to components such as the high-pressure pump and the first-generation timing chain.
- THP Flex: Introduced in 2015, it brought a series of mechanical updates requested by Brazilian engineers. It received improvements in injection calibration, new seals, and corrections to chronic peripheral components, making it considerably more robust for the national fuel.
Solution: The Three Commandments of THP Maintenance
If you want to avoid the infamous “repair lights” on your dashboard and ensure the health of your turbo system, strictly follow these diagnostic and preventative procedures:
- Thorough Oil Change: The THP engine runs very hot, and the turbine relies directly on the oil to avoid seizing. Change the lubricant (always using the 100% synthetic oil approved in the manual, usually Total 0W30 or 5W30 of the correct specification) every 7,000 km or 6 months, whichever comes first.
- Pay attention to the tensioner and timing chain: Unlike engines that use belts, the THP uses a chain. If, when starting the car in the morning, you hear a loud metallic noise coming from the engine (similar to a sewing machine), which disappears after a few minutes, the chain tensioner has lost pressure. Replace the kit preventively to avoid engine misalignment.
- Valve Decarbonization: Because it has direct injection, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, and does not pass through the intake valves to “clean” them. Over time, oil vapors stick to the valves and cause combustion problems (such as codes P1337 to P1340). The solution is to perform physical or chemical decarbonization in specialized workshops every 40,000 km.
- High Pressure Pump (HPFP): Symptoms such as engine stalling at high RPMs or difficulty starting a hot car often indicate a faulty high-pressure fuel pump. Diagnosis is made by measuring the fuel line pressure via scanner; if it is below 50 bar under acceleration, replacement is necessary.
Interesting fact: Why does the turbocharger “fill up” so quickly?
The great secret to the pleasure of driving a Citroën THP lies in the maximum torque of 24.5 kgfm available almost instantly: at just 1,400 rpm. This happens because the turbine uses technology. Twin-Scroll. The exhaust manifold splits the gases from the cylinders into two separate ducts leading to the turbocharger housing. This eliminates gas interference between the cylinders and causes the turbine to start spinning quickly even at very low RPMs, almost completely eliminating the infamous “turbocharger noise.” turbo lag (the delay in throttle response).
