What are the most common problems with the catalytic converter in Citroën cars? What happens if I drive with a broken one?

The catalytic converter is a fundamental component in the exhaust system of Citroën vehicles, responsible for… reduce the emission of polluting gases through an internal ceramic layer containing precious metals. The failure is usually caused by contamination (use of adulterated fuels) or by natural wear and tear over time, especially if the engine has fuel combustion problems.

The symptoms of a faulty catalytic converter are clear: the injection light coming on on the dashboard (which is not resolved by replacing the Lambda sensor), a strong smell of sulfur or “rotten egg” coming from the exhaust, and a gradual loss of power in the engine. In some cases, the internal ceramic may crack, causing a rattling noise when starting the car.

Driving with a clogged or broken catalytic converter is harmful and illegal. The blockage creates backpressure in the exhaust system that chokes the engine, drastically reducing performance and, in the long run, can even damage other components. It is an environmental and mechanical safety item that requires replacement.
