What is Error Code P1693?

In simple terms, the P1693 This is a “communication” or “start/stop request” error in the engine. • THE injection light (that little yellow one that looks like an engine) lit up on the dashboard.
  • Difficulty starting the vehicle.
  • The car enters “Safety Mode” (where it loses power to protect the engine).
  • Intermittent electrical faults.

Main Causes

It’s not just one part that breaks; it’s usually one of these three culprits:

  1. Weak or faulty battery: The number one cause in French cars. If the voltage drops, communication between the modules becomes “scrambled”.
  2. Immobilizer problems: The security system that recognizes your key.
  3. BSI or BSM failure: These are the car’s fuse and electronic control panels.
  4. Damaged Wiring: Wiring harnesses with poor contact, moisture, or oxidation (verdigris).

How to Solve the Problem? (Recommended Solution)

If you’re not an expert, the first thing to do is stay calm. Often, this error is a “ghosting” effect caused by a low battery.

Step-by-step solution:

  1. Test the Battery: Take the car to an auto electrician and ask them to check the health of the battery and alternator. If the battery is more than 2 or 3 years old, it may be the culprit.
  2. Battery Reset (BSI Procedure): Disconnect the positive battery terminal for about 15 minutes and then reconnect it. This may “reset” the modules and clear temporary errors.
  3. Check the Key: Try using the spare key. If the error disappears, the problem is with the chip in your main key.
  4. Contact Cleaning: Check that the cables going to the battery and fuse boxes are clean and properly tightened.

Expert Tip: If the error persists after these steps, it will be necessary to take the car to a mechanic who has the original brand scanner (Lexia/DiagboxGeneric scanners often misread the P1693 code, while the original pinpoints exactly where the wire is broken.
