THE Citroën C4 Pallas It’s known in Brazil for its “boat-like” comfort and technological features that many current brand-new cars lack. However, the French sedan has an “Achilles’ heel” that terrifies owners: the warning “STOP” accompanied by a deafening beep.

This is one of the most common technical problems reported by Pallas owners, and if not resolved correctly, it can lead to warping of the cylinder head. The good news? The solution usually costs less than R$ 100.

The Problem

You’re in traffic or have the air conditioning on, and suddenly the digital temperature gauge rises to the maximum and the red “STOP” light comes on. Often, turning the car off and on again makes the error disappear, but it returns minutes later. The main symptom is… The engine fan does not turn on in the first stage. (low speed).

How does it work?

The C4 Pallas’ cooling system operates with two fan speeds. The low speed should engage as soon as the engine reaches approximately 97°C or when the air conditioning is activated. For this low speed to function, energy passes through a component called… Fan Resistance (or Fan Relay), which is mounted near the radiator.

Why does the defect occur?

In Brazil’s tropical climate, this heating element operates under constant extreme heat.

  1. Thermal Fatigue: The internal spring of the heating element breaks, interrupting the low-speed circuit.
  2. Contact Oxidation: The resistor connector suffers from moisture and dust, creating a crust that prevents the passage of energy.
    The result: the engine overheats to its limit and only then does the “high speed” (emergency) mode engage, but by then the dashboard has already triggered the STOP warning.

Tidying Up (Step by Step)

You can check it yourself and, in many cases, replace the part (which costs between R$60 and R$90):

  1. With the engine cold, open the hood and locate the front grille.
  2. The heating element is fitted into the fan support, behind the grille (usually a rectangular piece with a perforated metal cover).
  3. Remove the screw (usually Torx or 10mm) and disconnect the plug.
  4. Check if the pins are melted or oxidized. If the internal spring is broken, replace the part with a new, good quality one.
  5. Golden Tip: Clean the contacts with contact cleaner spray before installing the new one.

Protection Fuse

If the fan still doesn’t turn on after replacing the resistor, the problem may be a blown fuse. In the C4 Pallas, this fuse is of the type… MAXI-FUSE and it is “hidden” in the engine fuse box (BSM).

  • Location: Below the main engine fuse panel. You need to release the side latches on the box to access the large fuses located underneath.
  • Related Fuse: Look for MAXI F1 (50A or 40A). If it is broken, no fan speed will work, which is a huge risk of total motor failure.

Expert Tip

Verdict: In the C4 Pallas, never ignore a temperature warning, even if it disappears quickly. The cooling system in this car operates at high pressure. If the resistor fails, the pressure rises and can burst the hoses or the thermostat housing (which is made of plastic). Replacing the resistor preventively every 2 or 3 years is the best investment you can make in this car.
