Citroën key dead? See how to change the battery and how to start the car.

Your Citroën started displaying the message “Remote control battery low” Is your dashboard light on or has it stopped responding to the opening and closing commands? No need to rush to the dealership! You can fix it yourself in 2 minutes.

1. Which battery should I buy?

The vast majority of Citroën keys (C3, C4 Cactus, C4 Lounge, Aircross) use a battery. CR2032 (the one that looks like a coin). You can easily find it in supermarkets or pharmacies.

Tip: Avoid using unbranded batteries, as they don’t last very long in these switches.

2. How to open the key

• Folding Knife Key (Common): Behind the key, there is a small slot or cover that can be removed with the help of a small screwdriver or even with the tip of the spare key itself.
• In-person Key (C4 Cactus/Lounge): Remove the physical key (the blade) from inside the remote. Use the blade itself to gently pry open the internal slot and release the battery compartment.

3. Help! The battery died and the car won’t start (Keyless Entry)

If your car has a button Start/Stop If the key is completely discharged, you’ll notice that when you press the button, the car doesn’t recognize the key. There’s a “secret” for these situations:

1. Get in the car.
2. Look for emergency location (It’s usually a recess in the steering column, where the ignition would be, or inside the center console/cup holders).
3. Place the key exactly in that spot (there’s an induction antenna there).
4. Step on the brake and press the Start button. The car will start, even without a battery in the key!

Golden Tip: Synchronization

Sometimes, after changing the battery, the remote control becomes “unconfigured”. If this happens:

1. Place the key in the ignition (or in the emergency locking mechanism).
2. Turn on only the panel.
3. Press and hold the button TO CLOSE of the key for 10 seconds.
4. Turn off the ignition and you’re done! The key will be synchronized again.
