Unlike cars with suspension MultilinkThe C3 and C4 lines use a Torsion Shaft. The major problem lies in the articulation system of this axle, which uses needle bearings.
- The Chronic Problem: These bearings have a rubber seal that dries out over time. Water and sand get in, the bearing seizes up and starts to “eat away” at the end of the axle (the swing arm).
- The “Open” Wheels: When wear reaches a critical level, the suspension arm loses its central alignment, and the wheel begins to lean outward (excessive negative camber). If you look at the car from behind and the wheels resemble an inverted “V,” the axle is already compromised.
- The Danger: If left untreated, the tire will begin to wear prematurely on the inside and, in extreme cases, the wheel may lock up or the arm may detach from the axle structure.
How to Solve:
- Preventive maintenance: Replace the axle bearing kit (usually every 80,000 km) before the noise starts. It’s a cheap service compared to replacing the axle.
- The Reformation: If the axle is already worn, simply replacing the bearing won’t solve the problem; the new part won’t have anything to support it. In this case, it’s necessary to take the axle to a specialized machining shop to have the axle end sleeved or to replace the rocker arm.
Expert Tip: Many mechanics install grease guns on the rear axle. This allows for periodic grease injection, expelling moisture and ensuring the bearing never runs dry, dramatically increasing the system’s lifespan.
