What is the function of the Lambda sensor in Citroën cars? What are the symptoms of a malfunction and how does this affect fuel consumption?

THE Lambda probeThe oxygen sensor, or exhaust gas sensor, is a crucial component located in the exhaust system of Citroën vehicles with electronic fuel injection. Its primary function is to measure the amount of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gases after fuel combustion. This reading is sent in real time to the car’s engine control unit (ECU), allowing it to adjust the air-fuel mixture for optimal combustion, ensuring fuel economy and low emissions.

When the Lambda probe malfunctions, the symptoms are immediate: electronic injection warning light coming on the most notable feature on the dashboard is, followed by a drastic increase in fuel consumption. This happens because the module, without the correct information from the sensor, enters “safety mode” and starts injecting more fuel than necessary as a precaution, resulting in an engine running erratically.

Besides high fuel consumption, the car may exhibit loss of power, irregular idling, and sometimes a strong smell of unburned fuel. Because it is constantly exposed to heat and gases, the Lambda sensor is a wear part that needs to be replaced to restore engine efficiency.
