The problem isn’t the hinge, but rather the… Door Limiter. It’s that metal rod that sits between the two hinges and serves to hold the door in place (so it doesn’t hit the wall or close on your leg).
- The Real Problem: Inside the limiter there are two plastic or metal rollers pressed by powerful springs. With use, the central pin or the metal structure of the limiter itself becomes fatigued or develops play. The “click” happens when the roller jumps from one stage to another and the play hits the metal of the door.
- The Myth of Grease: Applying grease to the outside rarely solves the problem, because it’s an internal issue within the part or its mounting. In many cases, the door panel where the limiter is screwed in begins to develop micro-cracks due to stress, which increases the clicking sound.
- The Solution: Most of the time, the only definitive solution is… limiter replacement. It’s a relatively inexpensive part, but it requires removing the door panel to replace it.
Maintenance Tip: Before buying a new part, check that the two screws (usually Torx or 10mm) that hold the limiter to the door are properly tightened. Sometimes, the noise is just the part “dancing” due to a lack of tightening. If you are going to replace it, prefer the original part, as aftermarket parts are usually very stiff and make the door feel “heavy”.
