In the Citroën lineup, there is a component called Oil Level Sensor (or Oil Level Sensor), which is located at the rear of the engine block, submerged in the oil pan. It measures the amount of oil as soon as you turn the key.
- The Reading Error: This sensor works by thermal resistance. Over time, it can develop a “sludge” of carbonized oil on its tip or simply suffer an internal electronic failure. The result is a false reading sent to the onboard computer.
- The Parking Factor: If your car is parked on a very steep incline or decline, the oil in the crankcase will move away from the sensor. When you start the car, it will read “low quantity” and give the warning, even if the engine is running perfectly.
- The Vital Difference: It is crucial not to confuse this warning with the Aladdin’s Red Light (Oil Pressure).
- Level Message (SERVICE): It’s usually just the quantity sensor.
- Red Pressure Warning Light (STOP): This indicates that the oil is not circulating. If this light comes on, turn off the engine immediately!
Location of Protection (Fuses): The level sensor is managed by PSF1 (BSM) under the hood.
- Correct Fuse: Generally the F10 (15A) or F1 (20A) In the BSM. If there is a short in the wiring harness of this sensor, it can blow the fuse that powers other engine sensors, causing the car to stall.
Technical Tip: If the error is intermittent, at the next oil change, ask the mechanic to remove the sensor and clean it with a decarbonizing agent. If the error is “Invalid,” it’s usually the sensor that has “gone bad” and needs to be replaced.. Remember: the manual dipstick test is always the real and absolute proof.
