How does the Hydractive suspension on the Citroën C5 work, and is it expensive to maintain in Brazil?

The Citroën C5, in its higher-spec versions, is known worldwide for its suspension. Hydractive (Hydropneumatics), a system that replaces traditional springs and shock absorbers. It uses a special fluid circuit (the famous LHM) and nitrogen-pressurized spheres to keep the car level and automatically adjust the height and stiffness of the suspension according to the road surface and speed. This results in ride comfort that is a benchmark in the market.

Maintaining this system requires care and skilled labor. highly specialized. LHM fluid should be changed on schedule, and the main wear item is the balls, which lose gas pressure over time and need to be replaced periodically to maintain comfort.

Although the system is robust, when serious failures occur, such as problems with the high-pressure pump or electronic actuators, the Repair costs are high. In Brazil, the parts are expensive and not easily found in regular workshops, requiring technicians with in-depth knowledge of hydraulic mechanics and the brand.
