Fan and Air Conditioner Resistance Stopping in Traffic (C3/C4)

The problem lies in First Fan Speed ​​Resistance (also called “Electric Fan Resistor”).

  • How it works: For the air conditioner to work while stationary, the radiator fan needs to rotate at a slow speed (1st speed) to cool the gas in the condenser. If this resistor burns out, the fan will only turn on when the engine is already very hot (2nd speed/Maximum speed).
  • The Symptom: Since the first speed doesn’t work, the air conditioning system pressure rises too high when the car is stationary. For safety reasons, the control unit shuts off the compressor to prevent a hose explosion. When you start driving again, the headwind cools the system and the air becomes cold again.
  • The Danger: Besides the discomfort, the engine constantly operates at the limit of overheating until the second gear “saves” the situation, which reduces the lifespan of the gaskets and hoses.

Location of Protection (Fuses): If the fan does not turn on none At high speed, the problem may be the high-power fuse (Maxi-Fuse):

  • Correct Fuse: Located in BSM (under the hood)It is usually the F1 or one of the large fuses hidden below the main board, with an amperage of 40A or 50A.

Technical Tip: The heating element is mounted directly on the radiator support (to be cooled by the fan’s own airflow). It usually burns out due to humidity or the end of the lifespan of the internal ceramic material. Replacement is simple and the part costs a fraction of the price of a new compressor.
