What do you feel? The temperature gauge on the dashboard goes up and down like crazy, or the car is very hard to start in the morning, as if it were “flooded.” Sometimes, the cooling fan kicks in at full speed as soon as you turn the key, even when the engine is cold.
Explanation for Laymen: THE Temperature Sensor It’s the car’s thermometer. If it malfunctions and tells the engine it’s -40°C (when it’s actually 30°C), the computer injects too much fuel, thinking it needs to warm up the engine. This “floods” the spark plugs and makes the car guzzle fuel like crazy.
- The danger: If the sensor gets stuck “down,” the engine could overheat and you wouldn’t even know it, because the dashboard will continue to show that it’s cold.
- The Solution: It’s an inexpensive part (the famous “Electronic Plug”). Replacing it preventively will keep you from being stranded.
