What happens: The car experiences a complete system “blackout.” For example, the ABS stops working entirely, the cooling system (fan) dies, or the ignition itself receives no power. The car may not even show any sign of life when the key is turned.
Where are they: They stay hidden. below the BSM main board (Engine fuse box). To access them, it is usually necessary to release the BSM latches and lift it. They are larger and either bolted on or heavily clipped in.
1. Maxi-Fuse MF1 (70A or 80A): The Fan Guardian
- Symptom: The engine overheats in traffic and the cooling fan never turns on, even with the air conditioning on.
- Possible Solution: Short circuit in the electric fan motor or melted wiring. If this fuse blows, the motor protection has been compromised. Check that the fan is not mechanically blocked by any object.
2. Maxi-Fuse MF2 (30A to 50A): The Brain of ABS/ESP
- Symptom: ABS, Brake, and Stability Control lights illuminate simultaneously. The brake pedal feels “weak” during emergency braking.
- Possible Solution: The ABS module either short-circuited or there was an overload after a poorly done jump start.
3. Maxi-Fuse MF3 (60A to 80A): BSI Power Supply
- Symptom: Nothing inside the car works. Not the dome light, not the dashboard, not the locks. The vehicle is brain dead.
- Possible Solution: Serious short circuit in the main wiring harness or battery connected backwards. This is a maximum safety fuse.
