What is really happening in the cooling system?

The thermostat valve is a small but extremely important part. It controls the flow of coolant between the engine and the radiator. When the engine is cold, it remains closed so that warming up happens faster. As soon as it reaches the ideal operating temperature, the valve opens and allows water to circulate through the radiator, cooling the engine.

Leakage problems generally occur at three specific points. The first is the sealing gasket between the valve and the engine block. This rubber gasket is compressed and, with the constant heating and cooling cycle, it hardens and cracks. The second critical point is the hose connections that go to the valve. The rubber rings of these connections also suffer the same wear. The third point, less common but possible, is the valve housing itself, which may develop cracks due to material fatigue.
