Many people only discover this problem when they need to change a tire or smell that unbearable musty odor coming from the back. You open the trunk, lift the carpet, and there it is: the spare tire compartment of your car. Citroën C3 or Aircross It turned into an aquarium.
If your car is “breeding fish” in the back, don’t despair. This is one of the most common sealing problems seen in repair shops, and most of the time you can fix it yourself without spending a fortune on a body shop.
The problem
The symptom is classic: after a heavy rain or washing, water seeps up at the bottom of the trunk. If not dealt with quickly, this moisture begins to oxidize the spare tire well and can even burn out nearby electrical components, such as the parking sensor module.
How does this happen?
Water enters through seals hidden by the bodywork or the plastic bumpers. It travels “invisible” paths inside the metal sheets and ends up running down to the lowest point of the car, which is precisely where the spare tire is located.
Because the defect appears
In the case of Brazilian Citroëns, the culprit is almost always one of these three items:

- Sealing of the rear lights: The sealing foam behind the lights dries out or comes loose. When water runs down the roof channel, it goes straight into the wiring hole.
- Relief valves (Vent-flaps): Behind the rear bumper there are some small plastic vents that serve to relieve air pressure when you close the door. If the rubber seals on these vents get stuck open or come loose, water from the tire “sprays” inside.
- Bumper screws: In some models, the bumper mounting hole is not sealed, and water gets in through there.
Tidying Up (Step by Step)
To stop the leak once and for all, do the following:
- The bucket test: Remove the spare tire and dry everything. Ask someone to spray water on the outside (with a hose or bucket) while you stay inside the trunk (with the seat folded down) using a flashlight. Keep an eye on the sides, near the lights.
- Silicone sealant: If the leak is coming from the taillight, remove it (it only has two internal screws) and use neutral silicone or automotive sealing tape around the perimeter.
- Golden tip: Check the rubber plug at the bottom of the spare tire well. If it’s loose, rainwater from the road will seep in underneath. If nothing else works, apply some silicone around the screws that hold the bumper in place.
Fuse and electrical components
Water and electricity don’t mix. If the water infiltration is too great, it can wet the taillight connectors or the reverse module.
- What to check: If the taillights start to malfunction or the reverse sensor stops working, check the fuse. F12 or F21 (in the inner box below the panel).
- Cleaning: If it got wet, use a contact cleaner spray on all connectors before starting the car again.
Expert tip
Verdict: In the C3 and Aircross, the biggest culprit is usually the taillight mounting. If you recently replaced a bulb, you may have installed the part slightly crooked, which allows water to enter. Always check that the taillight’s sealing rubber is properly “crushed” against the metal after tightening the screws.
