In the Brazilian automotive landscape of 2026, Citroën reinforces its commitment to technology. Flexallowing the consumer to choose between the performance of ethanol and the range of gasoline. With the evolution of the family of engines Turbo 200 (which equip the C3, Aircross and Basalt), the use of plant-based fuel is not only an ecological choice, but a strategy to extract maximum torque from the vehicle, transforming the driving experience.
However, to ensure that this economy doesn’t lead to failures, it’s necessary to understand how French electronics (now with Brazilian DNA) manages this mix.
Why does the Citroën “go faster” on ethanol?
The brand’s modern engines are optimized to take advantage of the higher octane rating of ethanol.
- Power Gain: In engines like the 1.0 Turbo, the use of ethanol increases horsepower to… 130 hp, ensuring more vigorous acceleration and faster 0 to 100 km/h speed.
- Internal Cooling: Alcohol has a higher latent heat of vaporization than gasoline, which helps cool the combustion chamber, allowing the turbine to operate at more stable pressures without the risk of pre-ignition (knocking).
- Emissions: Running on sugarcane-based fuel in a modern Citroën drastically reduces CO2 emissions in the “well-to-wheel” cycle, making it the cleanest alternative before the complete migration to electric vehicles.
Avoiding “Laziness” at the Start and Stalls
If you’ve chosen to run 100% on ethanol, follow these technical tips to avoid common problems, especially on cold days:
- The 10-Minute Rule: Whenever you switch from one fuel to another (e.g., the tank was full of gasoline and you filled it with ethanol), drive the car for at least 10 to 15 minutes before parking it. This gives the tank time to absorb the fuel. lambda probe recognize the new mixture and update the injection map in the control unit (AF – Air Fuel).
- Candle Health: Ethanol requires a stronger spark. If your Citroën is slow to start or misfires at low RPMs, check the condition of the spark plugs. Worn spark plugs are more susceptible to damage from the moisture in alcohol.
- Fuel filter: Ethanol has solvent properties and can loosen old dirt from the tank. Replace the fuel filter rigorously every 10,000 km or according to the maintenance plan to prevent clogging of the fuel injectors.
- Battery Up To Date: Since the cold start system in modern engines (without a separate fuel tank) uses the heating of the fuel injectors, the electrical demand when starting the car is higher. If the battery is weak, the system will not heat the fuel enough for ignition.
Interesting fact: The end of the cold-start fuel tank.
Do you remember having to fill a small gasoline reservoir in the engine compartment to get the car started in cold weather? In the 2026 Citroën line, that’s a thing of the past. All current models use the technology of… fuel heating in the gallery (system Flex StartSensors detect the ambient temperature and heat the resistors in the fuel injectors milliseconds before starting, ensuring that the engine starts on the first try even if the thermometer is below 10°C and the tank only contains ethanol.
