What do you feel? The car simply won’t start. When you turn the key, the dashboard lights come on, the windshield wipers may turn on by themselves (a Citroën safety mode called “limp-mode”), and the starter motor doesn’t even make a sound. The diagnostic scanner often can’t even “access” the engine system.
The Logic of the System: The CAN network is the system of twisted wires that carries information. The U1000 code indicates a “death” in the network. It’s as if someone had cut the company’s internet cable. Without communication, the BSI (on-board computer) cannot give the “start authorization” order to the engine, for fear of a serious short circuit.
- Possible Solution: The number one culprit is the BSM (Engine Fuse Box). It’s the one that powers the modules. If an internal relay fails or if the main fuse (Maxi-Fuse) has a bad connection, the CAN network “goes down”. Another common cause is a poorly installed aftermarket radio interfering with the car’s data network wires. Check the 5A and 10A fuses inside the cabin and under the hood.
