In Citroën engines (especially the 2.0 16V and the 1.6 16VThe engine is not held in place simply by rubber mounts. The main support (passenger side) is a… Hydraulic Cushion.
- The Real Problem: Inside this part there is a fluid (oil) bag that serves to absorb the vibration frequencies of the engine. Over time, this bag bursts or the fluid leaks. The engine mount “sags,” and the metal engine support begins to make direct contact with the vehicle body.
- The Symptom: Without oil dampening, all the natural vibration from combustion is transferred to the unibody. This generates a low-pitched noise (resonance) inside the cabin and that annoying vibration in the steering wheel at idle.
- The Common Mistake: Many owners buy “parallel” engine mounts that are made only of solid rubber (without the hydraulic system). The result is that the vibration continues or even worsens, as the parallel rubber is usually very hard.
How to Diagnose: Open the hood and look at the engine mount on the left side (when facing the vehicle). If there are dark oil stains around it, or if you notice that the metal piece is “sitting” on the rubber without any play, it’s broken.
Other Cushions: Don’t forget to Lower Cushion (Torque Limiter), known as “paddle”. If it breaks, you will feel a strong jolt in the transmission when accelerating and decelerating the car.
