Unlike regular cars, most C3 and C4 models use a Electro-hydraulic pump (GEP). Instead of being driven by a belt connected to the engine, it operates with its own electric motor that pushes the fluid.
- The Fluid Level Problem: Many drivers forget to check the power steering fluid because the reservoir is “hidden” (in the C4, it’s behind the passenger-side headlight). If the level drops, the pump sucks in air, generating a high-pitched noise (buzzing) and making the steering heavy and “rough”.
- Chronic Leakage: The most common leak occurs in rack seals (steering box) or in the pressure sensors. If oil leaks into the boots, you won’t see puddles on the floor immediately, but the level in the reservoir will drop.
- Electrical Failure (The “Power Steering Blackout”): If the steering suddenly becomes stiff, like that of a truck, the electric motor of the pump may have stopped. This happens often because oxidation in the power connector from the pump, which is exposed to moisture and dirt in the lower part of the fender.
Location of Protection (Fuses): This is one of the systems that consumes the most energy in the car. The fuse is not located in the standard fuse box, but rather in the… Maxi-Fuses (MF) hidden:
- Correct Fuse: Located in BSM (under the hood)It is usually the MF1 (70A or 80A). It’s located on the side or underneath the main fuse panel. If it blows, the pump stops completely.
Expert Tip: The correct fluid for Citroën’s electro-hydraulic power steering. This is not the common ATF. (red). The correct one is synthetic fluid. Total Fluid DA (usually orange/clear). Using the wrong oil can corrode the internal seals of the electric pump.
