Citroën’s parking assistance system is extremely sensitive to impedance. This means that any small change in the sensor’s electrical resistance (caused by moisture or internal dirt) makes the control unit read that “fault” as an obstacle or a system error.
- The Problem of Cleanliness: Unlike simpler systems, the C4’s sensor can suffer from the accumulation of polishing wax or debris in the microscopic gap around the sensor’s central pad. This “blocks” the ultrasonic vibration, causing the car to beep continuously (the famous false positive).
- Whip infiltration: The rear sensor wiring harness is exposed under the bumper. If the rubber cover tears, rainwater enters the connectors, causing a momentary short circuit that disables the entire system and displays an error message on the central screen.
- Sensor Painting: If the bumper has been repainted and the paint layer over the sensor is too thick, it will lose sensitivity or become erratic, as the paint prevents the part from oscillating correctly.
Location of Protection (Fuses): If the system shows no sign of life (nor does the error message appear), check in BSI (Cabin):
- Correct Fuse: Generally the F12 (15A), which also manages other driver assistance modules.
Diagnostic Test (The Finger Test): With the car running (ignition only) and reverse gear engaged, lightly touch the face of each sensor with your finger. A healthy sensor emits a… pulsating vibration Very subtle. If one of them doesn’t vibrate or vibrates irregularly, you’ve found the culprit.
