The Citroën C4 has a MacPherson strut front suspension that is very efficient on smooth roads, but suffers accelerated wear on uneven surfaces (common in Brazil).
- Focused Model: Citroën C4 (Pallas, Hatch, VTR – 2004 to 2013).
- Chronic Noise Problems: 1. Bieletas: It is the most common cause of metallic (“knocking”) noises in small ripples. The part is inexpensive, but it loosens easily. 2. Balance Bushings (Tray): When the rear control arm bushings tear, the car loses steering precision and experiences harsh bumps over larger potholes. 3. Steering Box: The C4 has a chronic tendency to develop a slight internal play in the steering rack, generating a noise that seems to come from “under the driver’s feet”.
- Steering System: Unlike regular cars, the C4 uses a Electro-hydraulic pump (GEP). If the steering suddenly becomes heavy, the problem may be electrical and not mechanical.
- Correct Fuse: The power steering system is protected by a Maxi-Fuse (high power fuse) located in BSM (under the hood), usually the MF1 70A or 80A (located on the bottom or side of the main fuse panel). If this fuse blows, the pump stops working and the steering becomes extremely heavy.
Maintenance Tip: When getting the alignment done, ask them to check the torque on the suspension frame bolts (subframe). Often, retightening them eliminates creaking noises that sound like they’re coming from expensive parts.
