Citroën Basalt: The down-to-earth SUV-Coupe that wants to dethrone the favorites. Discover its technical secrets.

The SUV market has changed. While previously consumers were only looking for “size,” today the key word is… style. The problem? SUVs with a coupe silhouette (that sporty roofline) are usually expensive. That’s where the… Citroën Basalt.

The third member of the C-Cubed project (along with the C3 and Aircross), the Basalt is more than just a pretty face. It features engineering focused on solving the dilemma: how to have a car that looks expensive but doesn’t break the budget when it comes time for maintenance?

1. The Balance of the CMP Platform

Basalt utilizes the modular platform. CMP. Technically, this is what allows the car to be lightweight (improving fuel consumption) while also having a generous wheelbase (2.64 meters).

  • Differential: While some coupes make rear passengers feel cramped, the Basalt leverages the Aircross platform to ensure adults travel comfortably without hitting their heads on the roof—a common mistake in designs of this type.

2. T200 Engine: Stellantis’ “Wild Card”

Under the hood, the Basalt delivers the most modern technology Stellantis has to offer: the engine. 1.0 Turbo Flex (T200).

  • Power and Torque: It has 130 hp and 20.4 kgfm of torque.
  • Why does it work? This engine is already used in the Fiat Pulse, Fastback, and Peugeot 208. For the owner of a Basalt, this means that the mechanics are widely known by any workshop in Brazil, and replacement parts are abundant and inexpensive.
  • Exchange: The CVT, which simulates 7 gears, focuses on smoothness and fuel economy, ideal for the heavy traffic of Brazilian capitals.

  • Technical Tip: The trunk lid opening is wide, making it easy to load bulky items (such as strollers or large suitcases), something traditional sedans struggle to do due to the narrow trunk opening.

4. Suspension: The Citroën DNA is preserved.

Many feared that the Basalt would be too rigid because of its sporty look. But Citroën maintained its technical signature:

  • Suspension Course: It is taller than a regular sedan, which prevents scraping in garages and potholes.
  • Calibration: The hydraulic bump stops have been adjusted so that the car “floats” over uneven asphalt, but without the instability of very tall SUVs. It’s the middle ground between the comfort of the C3 and the robustness of the Aircross.

5. Cost of Ownership: Where it beats the competition.

By sharing the dashboard and several internal components with the C3 line, Citroën is able to lower the selling price and the cost of trim parts.

  • Result: You get the design of an SUV-Coupe (which in the competition costs around R$140 thousand 160,000) for a much more competitive price, without sacrificing the turbocharged engine.

Conclusion: Is basalt right for you?

If you value a modern look and don’t want to compromise on a powerful and economical engine, the Basalt is the most logical choice right now. It proves that the “New Citroën” in Brazil has learned the recipe for success: European design with the robustness and maintenance costs of a popular car.
