Citroën Cooling System: The Secret to Avoiding a Blown Head Gasket

Artigo voltado ao mercado Brasileiro. Artigo atualizado em 10 de June de 2026 por João Daniel

For any Citroën owner, the temperature gauge (or the warning light on the dashboard) is the item that deserves the most attention. Historically, French engines operate within temperature ranges optimized for European efficiency, which requires the cooling system to be in perfect condition to cope with the heavy traffic and high temperatures of Brazil.

Neglecting the cooling system is the quickest way to cause a warped cylinder head or a blown head gasket, a repair that can be expensive and immobilize the vehicle for weeks.

Content: Critical Components by Model

Each Citroën engine has a “sensitive point” in the cooling system that must be monitored:

  • Older 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines: The expansion tank and return hoses often dry out over time, creating micro-leaks that are difficult to detect.
  • 1.6 THP engine: Because it is a high-performance turbocharged engine, it has a electric auxiliary water pump Specifically designed to cool the turbine even after the car is turned off. Failures in this pump or in the thermostat housing (which is made of plastic and can warp) are the most common causes of problems.
  • Turbo 200 Engines (New): They use long-lasting fluids, but require attention to the reservoir cap. If the cap does not seal properly, the system will not pressurize and the liquid will boil prematurely.

Solution: Prevention and Diagnosis Checklist

If you’ve noticed that the coolant level is dropping, follow this inspection checklist:

  1. Never use tap water: The chlorine and minerals in regular water corrode the internal passages of the motor and destroy the water pump seal. Always use… organic additive (ethylene glycol) diluted in demineralized water in the correct ratio (usually 50/50).
  2. Thermostat Valve Housing Inspection: In models like the C4 Cactus and C4 Lounge, the original housing is made of plastic. With heat cycles, it can crack. If there is leakage of “colored water” onto the gearbox, the housing is likely the culprit. The definitive solution for many is replacement with aluminum housings available in the aftermarket.
  3. Radiator Cleaning: Externally, the radiator can accumulate dirt, leaves, and insects, obstructing airflow. Careful external cleaning with water (without high pressure to avoid crushing the cooling rings) can improve thermal efficiency by up to 20%.
  4. Leakage Test: If there are no visible leaks, ask your mechanic to perform a pressure test on the system with a hand pump. This will reveal internal leaks or tiny holes in hoses that only appear when the car is hot.

Interesting fact: The Electric Fan Strategy

Have you ever noticed that in some Citroën models, the engine fan stays on for several minutes even after you remove the key from the ignition? This isn’t a defect! It’s a strategy of the electronic control unit to prevent “thermal shock” to the internal components. Since the engine stops circulating water when it’s switched off, residual heat rises and could damage sensors or the gasket. The fan remains on to cool the radiator and allow the heat to dissipate through natural convection, protecting your investment.
