Artigo voltado ao mercado Brasileiro. Artigo atualizado em 6 de July de 2026 por João Daniel
The Citroën C4 in Brazil has been sold in several versions and with various engines, each with its own characteristics. Understanding these differences is essential for maintaining the car in good condition and avoiding performance or fuel consumption problems.
🔧 1.1 Main Engines Used in Brazil
▶️ 1.6 16V Flex (TU5JP4 / EC5)
- Used in C4 Hatch, Pallas and C4 Cactus.
- Average power: 113 to 120 hp (depending on the year).
- Simple engine, but requires attention to ignition coils and timing belt.
- Technical tip: The timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 km or 4 years, even if the car is driven infrequently.
▶️ 2.0 16V Flex
- Present at C4 Hatch, Pallas and Picasso.
- Power: up to 151 hp.
- More robust than the 1.6, but more fuel-inefficient.
- Technical tip: Pay attention to urban fuel consumption. Proper preventive maintenance (correct spark plugs, filters, and 5w40 oil) can help reduce fuel consumption by up to 10%.
▶️ 1.6 THP Turbo
- Used in C4 Lounge and C4 Cactus.
- Power: 165 to 173 hp.
- Modern and powerful engine, but susceptible to lack of maintenance.
- Technical tip: requires synthetic oil 0W30 or 5W30 PSA approved oil and frequent oil changes (every 7,000–8,000 km). If you use the wrong oil, the risk of carbon buildup increases significantly.
🛢️ 1.2 Recommended Fuel
The Citroën C4 engines sold in Brazil are flexHowever, the type of fuel used influences performance and lifespan.
- Regular gasoline: It can be used, but it tends to generate more dirt in the fuel injectors.
- Additive gasoline: Recommended, as it helps keep the injection system clean.
- Ethanol: It delivers more power, but increases fuel consumption. Ideal for 1.6 engines for urban use.
Technical tip: Filling up with one tank of premium gasoline for every three tanks of ethanol helps clean the fuel system.

| C4 Cactus 1.6 | 1.6 16V EC5 | 8 (E) / 11.5 (G) | 10.5 (E) / 14.5 (G) |
(E = Ethanol | G = Gasoline)
⚠️ 1.4 Technical Care for C4 Engines
- Never drive with the tank on reserve: the fuel pump on the C4 line is sensitive and can burn out easily.
- Replace spark plugs and wires every 30,000 km (or sooner if you notice acceleration problems).
- Beware of overheating: many owners report cooling system failures. Check the water level in the reservoir weekly.
- If the car is turbocharged (THP), Wait 1 minute after stopping the car. before turning off the engine, to preserve the turbine.
The C4 line of engines ranges from simple and robust to turbocharged versions that require more care. Using the correct fuel, respecting oil change intervals, and monitoring the cooling system are the main measures to extend the car’s lifespan and save on expensive maintenance.
